I found a possible baptism for his daughter Betty - 7 Nov 1821 at St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, parents Richard and Peggy of Pickup Bank, occupation weaver.
And I found an 1841 census entry for that family at Woodnook, New Accrington:

Richard Hoghton 42 Weaver Y
Ann Do 31 Y
Betty Do 20 Cotton Doubler Y
Edward Do 17 Cotton Weaver Y
Rodger Do 15 Cotton ??? Y
Thomas Do 13 Do Do Y
Alice Do 9 Do Tracer Y
John Do 6 Y
Sarah Do 3 Y
Mary Do 8 months Y

But I've never managed to work out whether this is the right Richard, with the wrong occupation! I shall look into them a bit more and see if I can work it out.

This is the same family in 1851, and Richard is no longer a weaver, so maybe he was a labourer in 1842!

Hooray! I've found a baptism for a Richard Houghton 2 Nov 1845 at St James, Accrington, parents Richard and Ann, abode Shoe Mill, father's occupation Carter. My Betty's residence on her marriage cert was Shoe Mill, so it must be the same family. Richard senior seems to have quite a few occupations after 1841. Now to add loads of people to my tree! (Well, OH's tree).

Two possible baptisms at Pickup Bank, but one has parents Rothwell and Mary, and the other one Edward and Betty, and since my Richard's first two children were Edward and Betty and he didn't have a Rothwell, as far as I know, I think he must be the one baptised 21 Aug 1799 St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, abode Pickup Bank, parents Edward and Betty.

Update - I've found the other Richard on the censuses and he did have children called Rothwell and Mary so I'm sure mine is the Edward and Betty one.

Thanks, Julie. I also found his burial - 17 May 1863 at All Saints, Clayton le Moors, Richard Houghton age 66, abode Albert St.

This is the 1861 census entry:
Albert St., Clayton le Moors, Lancashire
Richard Houghton Head Mar 60 Retired Farmer(!) Lancs Clayton le Moors
Ann Houghton Wife Mar 48 Do Do
Richard Do Son Un 15 Cotton Weaver Do Do
James Do Son 13 Do Do Do

OH says Clayton le Moors is near the other places. Also that Pickup Bank is a tiny hamlet in the wilds.

I'll update post #1 later so it's all together and I can see if anything is still missing. I found his parents' marriage 28 Jan 1799 at St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Edward Houghton, innkeeper of the parish of Blackburn, and Betty Duckworth, widow of the parochial chapelry of Haslingden. I was worried it might not be the right couple because there are some baptisms of children of Edward and Betty before that, but then I found details of the marriage licence and Edward was a widower so he must have had a previous wife also Betty. Abode is Yate Bank on the marriage licence. I wonder whether Rothwell Houghton is Edward's brother or father. I had a quick look last night for Rothwell Houghtons and there was one with a different spelling born in Suffolk in 1735. Anyway, got to go out now but I'll come back to this later.
