Hi NA
Firstly there's no such thing as too big
For restoration purposes the bigger the better ie scan at 300-600 and with the scale set at 100% at least.

Questions :-
Do you have the originals ?
Have you enlarged the boy or is that a straight forward scan ?

*skids in sideways. Oops sorry bit tardy.

Hi Rachel
Big is good for you eh?! lol Erm I don't have the originals any more and can't remember what scale they were scanned at, don't think the little chap was a very clear picture may not have been an original photo but from a scan... so not very helpful. Would you like me to post as they were in my files? Not to worry if it's too much work. Thanks for looking any way. :-)

Apologies for the delay and quality of restore ~ not a lot can be done with this.

Colour would bring a little more out of it/define the areas but, sadly, there's no detail to play with.
Please say if you'd like some colour ~ and are there any colours you fancy ?

The yellow hue on the original would be part of the deterioration of the photo. It's quite a nice effect ! and I can put a filter on it if you prefer that 'old' look.

Thank you so much for trying Rachel. I can see the fabrics a bit better now. Not the best subject matter, sorry. Anyway cheers for your efforts.
