You could get Catherine's birth certificate to find out Mary's maiden name.

oh, Kite,

I think I have it - I do - its says Mary Arnold formerly FITZPATRICK.

Of course, because I knew where they lived at her birth, which matches the census.

Not much help though, ARNOLD and FITZPATRICK born in Ireland.

Can't find a marriage before James Jnr's birth, in Manchester, so maybe they married in Ireland and came over after the 1841 census ?

Do you know for sure that Mary was James jnr's mother? There is a marriage between James Arnold and Mary Fitzpatrick Apr-Jun 1849 Manchester, vol 20, p 730; Lancashire BMD lists it as Manchester Register Office or Registrar Attended.

Hi Kite

yes you could change the title for me that would be great.
Well, no I don't know for sure about James Jnr's mother. I saw that marriage, but discounted it as too late. Maybe he did have a different mother. more investigation needed I think.

The only other scrap I know is that Catherine's sister Mary Arnold, aged 15 is with Catherine and her husband Christopher Eccles in the 1871 census. No James and Mary Arnold found. I think James Arnold Jnr is with his wife Mary and his m-i-l Elizabeth Shannon n Chadderton.

By date (age) and location, its possible that Mary Arnold died Jun Q 1861 Manchester and James Arnold died Mar Q 1855.

The IGI is showing a James Arnold born to James and Martha baptised 1843, but that's in Liverpool.

Will be doing some more searching later tonight

Have now got James Arnold and Mary Fitzpatrick's marriage certificate, which gives a little more info, so I have amended the original post.

Catherine Arnold's sister born after her, was Margaret Arnold (mmn Fitzpatrick) not Mary as transcribed in the 1871 census, born in Manchester in the March Q of 1853.

Some searching in Irish online records give me a baptism in Bandon, Cork and Ross for Mary Fitzpatrick daughter of James and Catherine Fitzpatrick on 30 Nov 1828. Sponsors Jerh Cowhig and Margaret Coghlan.

Now to figure out how to prove they are the correct family.

And this could be them on the 1841 census, but no Mary unless she is "Margt" (that's what it looks like to me, anyway):
