Default Daniel Knight (MFFMF)

Name - "official" name and what they were known as

C. 1779, probably in Leicestershire.

Married Ann Orton on 9 May 1803 at Saint Margaret's church, Leicester.

Occupation(s) - if any
Bricklayer

Addresses where they lived (including county if in UK) - and please list which censuses you have or haven't found him/her on (if s/he lived in census times!).
1803-1820: Leicester (St. Margaret's area)
1815: Belgrave Gate, Leicester

Date, place and cause of death
Probably 1820, Leicester.

Date and place of burial
Probably 7 February 1820 at Saint Margaret's church, Leicester, aged 41.

Details of will / administration of their estate - if applicable
None found.

Memorial inscription - if any
Not known.

I haven't been able to find a baptism for Daniel; the IGI doesn't have much for Leicester, and I've checked the LDS microfilm of St. Margaret's baptisms with no success (much of it is illegible, though). I don't think he's the son of William and Mary baptised in Husbands Bosworth in 1785, because that Daniel appears on the 1841 census with a different occupation, wife and children.

The 1820 burial is probably correct; the last child, Daniel, was baptised at Saint Margaret's church, Leicester on 21 March 1820, and his parents are described in the baptism register as "Daniel (late) and Ann".

There's a Daniel Knight baptism 30 Jan 1780 at All Saints, Loughborough, parents John and Elisabeth (on FamilySearch). And another one at the same church 29 May 1783, parents Daniel and Elisabeth.

Yes, I'd seen those, Kite, thanks. I'm not ruling them out entirely, but the family has no other connection as far as I know with Loughborough, which is about 15 miles from Leicester.

The second one might possibly be interesting, though, come to think about it; an Elizabeth Knight, wife of Daniel, was buried at St. Margaret's, Leicester in 1802, so it's possible that Daniel's parents were married and he was baptised in Loughborough, and they moved to Leicester later.

I'll have a look for a settlement order next time I'm at the Leicester RO.

Hi Mary, Not meaning to hijack, but I have ancestors who died in the workhouse in Cornwall and Somerset, would they have had Settlement Orders against them? Where do you find these records?

A settlement or removal order was issued when somebody moved from one parish to another (the removal order sent them back to their original parish if the new parish didn't accept that they had a right of settlement).

Not all these orders have survived, but when they do, they're normally held by the local record office.

You could try e-mailing the Record Office for the place you're interested in, and ask if they have any record of the family in their Poor Law and workhouse records.

This site has a lot of information about workhouses, and gives some idea of what records have survived:
