Default Nancy and Ann(e)

How likely is it that a girl baptised as Nancy would be called Ann later?

I have a complicated scenario to unravel regarding OH's ancestor Ann(e) Thompson. There is a baptism for a Nancy Thompson in 1795 at All Saints, Wakefield, and I am wondering if it is her.

It's all connected with Thrulines and DNA matches, but it isn't very straightforward!

Yes Ann is another name for Nancy, or to put it correctly Nancy is another name for Ann. Nancy is also used for some called Agnes don't ask me why though!

ThuLines are suggesting that Ann Thompson's mother is Mary Colvard and her grandfather John Colvard.

On clicking on the tree that has this information I can see that Ann's father is John Thomposon. His marriage to Mary Colvard is attached:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...35/edit/record

Name John Thompson
Event Type Marriage
Marriage Date 4 May 1783
Marriage Place Wakefield, All Saints, Yorkshire, England
Parish as it Appears Wakefield, All Saints
Spouse Mary Collard
Household Members Name
Name John Thompson
Name Mary Collard

Mary Colvard's (Collard) parents are given as John Colvard and Elizabeth Broadhead.

I think the baptism given for Ann (at York, some way away) is incorrect, consequently I looked again for a possible baptism. Ann is given as having been born at Stanley, Wakefield, from the censuses.

Other children of John and Mary Thompson:
Richard 29 May 1787
Hannah 4 October 1788
Mary 14 September 1791 - all three at All Saints, Wakefield

Sarah 16 April 1797 St John Wakefield - and this states after the mother's name "daughter of John and Elizabeth Colvard"

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...nSearchResults

In 1804 there is the non-conformist birth of Fanny Thompson, also with the parents John and Mary.

Now, here is another twist!

Yesterday I was investigating a DNA match for my husband and I have been putting together a tree, but hadn't been able to find a link.

However, I suddenly realised this morning that a 3x-great-grandmother of the DNA match was called Elizabeth Colvard (or variants) and that she married in 1798 at All Saints, Darton, which isn't far from Wakefield. So I need to establish whether there is a link between her and the Colvard family in Wakefield.

She married by Licence:

First name(s) Elizabeth
Last name Colvard
Age 18
Birth year 1780
Residence parish Darton
Residence county Yorkshire
Licence year 1798
Licence date 27 Mar 1798
Intended marriage place Darton PC
Spouse's first name(s) Thomas
Spouse's last name Tissington
Spouse's age 21
Spouse's parish Darton
Spouse's county Yorkshire

Sorry, Maggie, I meant to thank you as soon as I saw this but somehow didn't.

Ann/Nancy was alive at Wakefield in 1861 but I was never able to find her death or burial.

On FMP I have just found this:

First name(s) Nancy
Last name Crosland
Sex Female
Age 70
Birth year 1796
Residence Leeds
Death year 1866
Burial year 1866
Burial date 28 Mar 1866
Burial place Wakefield
Dedication West Parade Chapel
County Yorkshire (West Riding)
Country England
Archive reference C13/38/1/3/1
Collection name Wakefield district burials

So she continued using Nancy!

Also I note she was living in Leeds:
CROSSLAND, NANCY 70
GRO Reference: 1866 M Quarter in LEEDS Volume 09B Page 413

Her son Richard Crosland had settled in Leeds by this time, so it looks as though the name of Nancy has helped me find her.

That's okay, so the Thrulines helped and the other tree is correct and you now realise she was baptised Nancy?

Yes, I just need to tie her up with the Colvard on my other DNA match! All in the same geographical area but hard to get the connection in the mid-1700s.
