Default Where do I start??

Can anyone give me any tips on where to start regarding a relatives service record?
I have a name, DOB and a place of birth, nothing more.
Also, I'm looking for my fathers national service record, he's still alive but is unable to give me any information due to Dementia.
I'm assuming rightly or wrongly that he would have been conscripted at the age of 18, so that would have been in 1951.

Welcome to the forum.

Are these two separate people whose service records you are looking for, or just one? If you are talking about two different people, roughly when would the first person who you mention have served? (Don't post any distinguishing info e.g. name etc if that person is still alive, though.)

There is info on here about how to apply for relatively recent service records:

Thanks for your quick response KiteRunner.
The first person is my wife's estranged father who died in 1995, hence the fact she knows next to nothing about his WW2 service other than the fact she thinks he served in Egypt.
If I had his service number I'm in with a chance I think.
I think my only option in both cases is to file a request for military records for both of them.

The WW2 records are in the process of being transferred to TNA and digitised but it is going to take a few years. There is some information on here:
