I think so too. I'm trying to come up with a situation where James married a Mary but there is another Mary as well. Another Mary would have to be the widow of one of James' brothers but I can't get the children to fit. There is only one Elizabeth Venn marrying a Venner and her father was James.

I can't twist it any other way.

Thank you all for looking. I know it was a lot to type and would be a lot to take in.

I did also try to make Elizabeth Venn/Lyon a red herring, but there's no birth, baptism or 1841/51/61 or 1871 census entry to fit. I feel it's very likely she is Maria.

I wonder why she would change her name, especially as she already has a sister Elizabeth.

I've just found Elizabeth in 1901 aged 65 (so, dob earlier than in 1881 and 1911), surname Lyon. She is John Hall's housekeeper again. Her place of birth is recorded as Crowland Lincs, but surely that must be wrong as Kings Brompton Somerset isn't going to have been made up in 1911 - if she wasn't from there then they would probably never have heard of the place!!

I was following a Tom/Thomas Venner today and he changed his county of birth over 3 census - Somerset, Devonshire and then Yorkshire, from memory. Luckily for me his wife and children all stayed the same and remained at home or I would not have found him.

John Hall was from Crowland Lincs wasn't he? So maybe his place of birth was just recorded for Elizabeth.

I think that's far more likely than her place being wrong in 1911.

Maria was a servant in 1861, so housekeeper is just a step up.

Sadly no Lyons in the house she worked for but the father was a Joseph.

I wish Mary Venn had left something to all her grandchildren just for me to be sure. Poor Maria only got a half share of Mary's clothes.
