The usual assumptions - must have been her employer who did her wrong. Must have abandoned the child to her parents because he was with them on one night in ten years.

OC, the first thing that I wanted to post was why would she assume that Walter and his mother didn't see each other or ever live together on the evidence of a couple of census entries. Also, his was probably close to his grandmother.
