Default Dennis James McCarthy aka James Carter

Birth/baptism not found
could be Marylebone or Holborn according to censuses, and his putative parents Callaghan and Mary McCarthy had a daughter who was born in Marylebone.

Putative parents: Callaghan McCarthy, greengrocer, born Fermoy, Cork, Ireland and Mary, born Kilkenny, Ireland.

1841 - not found
Too many Dennis McCarthys and James McCarthys around but none with a Callaghan.

Marriage: Dennis McCarthy & Elizabeth Alice Goodwin, married 19 June 1848 at Trinity Church, Holborn. Dennis's age is given as 20 giving a birthyear of 1827/28. His occupation is cooper, father is Callaghan McCarthy, wagonner and his address 16 Saffron Terrace, Saffron Hill.

In 1866 his son Charles James McCarthy was born, but between registering the birth and the next census he changed his name to Carter. Possibly as a result of anti-Irish feeling after a Fenian bomb explosion in Clerkenwell in 1867.

{in the next household, same address is their blind son Richard and his wife Emma who was also blind, but their surname is McCarthy}

Death
Dennis James McCarthy aged 77, died 19 March 1907, Union Infirmary, West Ham, of morbus cordis, syncope.

In 1911, James' widow Elizabeth McCarthy is with their married daughter Mary Ann Layton and her husband and family, and Mary Ann registered James' death so it is likely that both parents were living with the Laytons prior to James' death in the infirmary.
