Broughton Abbott of the Lancashire Fusiliers, b 1892 Barnoldswick. He had been a soldier for 7 years when he died of wounds on 26 April 1917 near Calais. He had seved in India and the Dardanelles. He was shot in the legs at Suvla Bay and spent time in hospital in Malta before returning to England for a year. 5 weeks before his death he was sent to France and was wounded again in both legs, his right leg was amputuated above the knee and nursing sister WM Langlands wrote to the family to tell them of the grave situation, and then again to inform them of his death. He was my great grandmother's brother.

These are from OH's tree.

The above photo is on a postcard and written on the back it says:

Best Wishes from Ben
to Mother Lily and Bert
Write soon

The wound is on my left hand.

and this one is also a photo on a postcard, this time with the photographer's details: Photo by W White, 21 Broad St, Wolverhampton and the writing says:

Keep this one and I will send you an enlargement.
That's me standing up. Ben.

After about 20 years++ of wondering we are still stuck with who Ben is! We know who Lily and Bert are, but whilst "mother" is obviously Ben's mother she isnt their mother too.

I don't know what that dress uniform is either.

Oh and I forgot, who else thinks the two Ben's don't look like the same person, yet the name and handwriting seem the same!
