This is the link to his son's thread from TO3G:
James Horwell aka..

Think we might need to work back from James to try to find John's marriage; have you got any more info on James since we did TO3G?

James's details from the various censuses etc are as follows:
1841 age 20 born Devon
1851 age 31 born Crediton, Devon
1861 age 45 born Showbrook, Devon
1871 age 53 born Showbrook
1881 age 66 born Shoebrook Devon.
Age 68 on death in 1890.

Ah, I see FamilySearch has a christening 16 May 1819 at Crediton of a James Horrell, parents John and Frances. That looks hopeful!

In which case the marriage is 14 Mar 1819 Crediton - John Horrell married Frances Pope (also on FamilySearch).

There is a possible for Frances in 1851, Fanny Horrell age 57, born Morchard Bishop, working as a servant in Sandford, but I'm not sure whether the marital status is W or U.

Possible death reg for John - John Horrell Oct-Dec 1845 Crediton vol 10 p 47.

There is a Frances Pope christened Morchard Bishop 5 May 1793, parents Henry and Frances, but there is also one christened at Crediton, 27 Sep 1795, parents John and Frances.

Sorry I didn't reply before, Kate.

Thanks for your input. I had some of the info you found but deliberately didn't post it because I wanted to see if our suppositions were the same

It's impossible to see which Frances is more likely:
The Morchard Bishop christening would tie in with the Frances Horrell on census in that village on the 1851.

A contact has given me a lot of info on this family but I'm not satisfied. There are too many variables (mainly the Horrell/Hurrell/Howill/etc spellings).

He reckons that John married Frances Pope when she was 6 months pregnant, in Crediton. They then waited 5 years before producing another 7 children in Shobrooke, the last one in 1837. They then farmed all the children out, keeping just the last 2 (aged 7 & 3) with them for the 1841 census.
