I can only assume this was a typo, or perhaps due to the fact of a very faded engraving. In any case I now have the image of the burial record from St Andrews Kildwick dated 24.11.1841, and also he was present on the 1841 census taken on 6 June. ================================================== ======== The rest of this entry is what I originally posted. I was quite clueless at the time. Many thanks to all who have helped me along the way, especially Elizabeth who took me by the hand and led me gently away from Heptonstall where there was nothing for me to find. Nor was Mary Holoron or Holoran ever mine. A lot of the other information is good, but I know a lot more now than I did before. I am somewhat doubtful of the marriage Elizabeth found in post #12 for David's parents but that is a topic for another thread. Link to their son Robert: MFMF Robert Pickles ================================================== ======== Name - unknown, father of Robert Pickles Date and place of birth - 1800-1810? WRY? (RD Skipton, but this birth would precede the 1836 Act) FMP has 2 plausible births for the son Robert Pickles in Heptonstall, 1829 and 1832. (I can't view them.) Robert's daughter Emma was b 1854. Names of parents - unknown Date and place of baptism - * Details of each of his or her marriages - unknown Occupation(s) - unknown Addresses where they lived (including county if in UK) - probably West Riding of Yorkshire, possibly Lancashire Date, place and cause of death - unknown Date and place of burial - unknown Details of will / administration of their estate - if applicable - unknown Memorial inscription - unknown MFM was Emma Pickles. Regardless of what is said on 1881 census (Sutton-in-Craven), I think she is from Cowling, which is Skipton. Born 1854. I do believe my mother told me her father's mother's people were from Skipton. Among the 12 faces on MF/MM wedding photo are two labeled "Uncle David" and "Aunt Ann" by MF. If there were 6 from the groom's side and 6 from the bride's side, then David and Ann are MF's family (I know who the rest are, and 6 are MM's side). Ann looks very much like MFM in same photo, so I'm guessing these are MFM's brother and sister? So I think I'm looking for siblings Emma, David and Ann born in the right time period to the same mother with surname Pickles in Skipton. It seems I found an Ann, don't remember where, b 29 May 1857. In 1881 I have a David Pickles in Cowling b 1844 with wife Sarah and children including "Francis Robt. Pickles". My family photos include a Sarah Pickles, labeled by my mother as "wife of David, mother of Frank". David's birth may actually have been registered in Sep Q 1843. Emma b Mar Q 1854. MFF and MFM James Berry-Emma Pickles marriage was June Q 1874 in Settle (FreeBMD). In 1871 census, i.e., prior to this marriage, there is Emma Pickles age 17 living with her father Robert Pickles in Cowling, along with a Mary Driver also age 17. In 1881 census Emma and James Berry are living together with their two children Walter and Maggie in Sutton (Keighley). But the marriage breaks up. In 1891 census, Walter is living with James; Emma is nearby with Maggie and a boarder the same age as Emma, by the name of Mary Haigh. Are you curious? I got curious. Yes, Mary Driver married William Haigh in Huddersfield Dec Q 1874 (9a 491). Emma and Mary are back together again. I think I am happy for them. By the 1901 census, I find an Emma Berry of the right age living with a Pickles family in Cowling. Head of household is Frederick Pickles, and I know that there was a Fred Pickles in my family. So I would say the Emma in 1871 with father Robert Pickles is definitely my MFM. Now, who is Robert's father? Thanks in advance for any and all help! P.S. I found a marriage of Robert Pickles and Mary Holoron/Holoran in Dec Q 1853 Skipton 9a 87. It appears that Emma's mother was Irish, but that's a story for another day and another thread! P.P.S. Yes, I am going to get some certificates. *MF/MM's marriage certificate (1900 Leeds) says ceremony was Wesleyan Methodist. Not sure which side was, or if both were, Wesleyan, nor how many generations back that might go. Last edited by Janet; 07-09-16 at 13:51. Janet, why are you looking at Heptonstall for births? Is there any particular reason?
What do you know about Robert Pickles otherwise? Do you have an approximate year of birth? I must admit I'm confused! |

This Robert Pickles was born in 1820, so it is probable his father was born prior to 1800.
In 1851 Robert already seems to be a widower and the children aren't with him. Perhaps he married again after 1851 and Emma was the result of a 2nd marriage. 1851 Census PICKLES, Robert SKIPTON, Yorkshire (West riding) HO107 piece 2278 folio 408 page 38 PICKLES, Robert Lodger Widower M 31 1820 Warehouseman Cowling He's lodging with the Smith family at Kildwick, just up the road from Cowling. There's a baptism at Kildwick, which as Elizabeth points out is just up the road from Cowling of a Robert Pickles

As it looks like Robert had been married twice, according to the census we need to get his marriage certs to confirm his father's name, which will hopefully be David. I think the missing bride from the 1853 marriage is Nancy Emmott.
