Unless they were Quakers or Jews they wouldn't have had a non--conformist wedding before 1837 (at least they shouldn't have!)

What was the earliest baptism date of their children, to give you an approx. marriage date and was the surname always transcribed as Headland?

Vita, I was just having a little look at the children's baptisms and I noted bapt 1806, 1808, 1810 then 1821, 1824 and 1831. I thought that is strange the big gap. I thought possibly prison or military.
(From memory) I looked on Ancestry and found that Thomas Headland enlisted April 1815 and fought in Belgium at Waterloo and he also received a pension with his name written as Corp Thomas Hedgland. Not sure if you know this or have reason to discount it but thought it worth mentioning. Julie

As well as the baps you mention Julie, there's another in 1836 at St Pancras for a dau, Amelia Julia, born in 1827.

There's another at St George Hanover Square:

10 January 1816 Charlotte Christiana born 10 Dec 1815. The family are of Bird St, father a painter. So that one is right in the middle of the gap! (and 6 months after Waterloo!). As Thomas enlisted in April, Christiana must have been newly pregnant. Does the army record state a discharge date? (I couldn't find the army record)

Well, hello both! A bit late joining you today. Very interesting developments - thanks a lot.

Julie - sorry I didn't get to post b/dates before you did, but with Merry's addition of

Charlotte Christiana you have accounted for all. The amateur genealogist friend who did

a lot of the original work for me has pencilled in "another?" in between CC & Matilda Jane

b 1821, but I've never been able to trace another child.

I've haven't come across Thomas with a different spelling of surname before, but other

Headlands (likely father Isaac & sibling Robert, thread "A Stubborn Brick Wall" refers)

appear as Hedland or Edland.

The enlistment info is new to me - well done. Likewise the Bird St address.

Ooooh, I do love it on here!

Apologies - above should read "With the addition of Charlotte Christiana & Amelia Julia."
