Default (54)Edward Percy Bingle, 20827, 12th Bn Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorks Regt)

54th of the Old Boys of St Wilfrid's school, Haywards Heath to lose his life in WW1.

Edward Percy Bingle, 20827, 12th Bn Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorks Regt) formerly M/300788, R.A.S.C

Edward’s mother was a Londoner - Matilda Elizabeth Bingle - who as a 13 year old in 1881 was a “waif and stray”, supported by a charity in London, and was sent to Canada in July of that year. She later made her way back to England where Edward was born 1899 in Cuckfield, Sussex.

By 1901 Matilda was in another London institution, St Faith’s, Vauxhall Road as a needlewoman, then in 1911 was a domestic servant in Vauxhall road for a vicar. It is likely that she died in Chelsea in 1919, though her age had been overestimated at 8 years older than she actually was.

Edward had been adopted in Haywards Heath by John and Rosa Marchant of 1 Wood View Cottages, 97 New England Road who already had 6 much older children. In 1906 his new family's brother and sister Abner and Ada Marchant were assaulted by a neighbour, Robert Harmes, after Edward Percy had thrown dust at Harmes’s child. Harmes had hit Abner in the chest and throat and Ada in the face and was fined £2 15s and costs or 14 days hard labour.

Percy was killed in action 12 Dec 1917. The Sussex Express printed a letter that had been received by Rosa on 11th Jan 1918:

SAD INFORMATION - Mrs A Marchant has received the following letter from the Company Sergeant Major of the West Yorks:- “I am sorry that Private P Bingle is among the reported missing in an engagement on the 12th December. A parcel you sent him was given to his chums, as is the custom here. He was a good soldier, and we are sorry to lose him.” Private Bingle was the adopted son of Mr & Mrs Marchant who live in New England Road.

Mrs Marchant was paid his effects of £5 8s 2d on 2nd April 1919 and a further War Gratuity of £3 on 12th Nov 1919. Abner was also killed in the war.

I was contacted by the great granddaughter of Matilda’s brother via Ancestry recently, she has dedicated a Tower of London poppy to him and sent a message of thanks to the children of the school who had honoured him and his schoolfellows at the town war memorial last year.
