Sarah Jones, maiden name Bellis, made a will:
JONES Sarah 15 Dec 1888 The Will of Sarah Jones late of Market-street Rhosllanerchrugog in the Parish of Ruabon in the County of Denbigh Widow who died 9 April 1888 at Market-street was proved at St. Asaph by Thomas Bellis of Market-street Shopkeeper the Brother and Benjamin Pritchard of Drefechan Farm in the said Parish Farmer the Executors. You can order it for £1.50. I'll post the link in a bit. EDIT: I have to say, I'm not convinced this is the correct woman yet. A Thomas Bellis died in 1901. He was 82. Deaths Jun 1901 (>99%) Bellis Thomas 82 Wrexham 11b 177 He left a will: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...&usePUBJs=true He lived at Market Street. However, he would be too old to be the brother to the Sarah Jones maiden name Bellis in your tree. Last edited by ElizabethHerts; 11-04-20 at 16:41. |

Thanks very much Elizabeth et al. I have learnt so much already just from this thread.
Is it worth me paying to join findmypast or does it have the exact same info as ancestry.com, for which I am a fully paid member. Thanks Nick |

I have had subs for Ancestry an for Find My Past this year. I tend to prefer Ancestry as I've used it longest (over 25 years!) and am more familiar with it, but I do find that FMP sometimes finds records I can't find on Ancestry. You don't say where you are Nick, but lots of public libraries allow you to access family history sites free if you'r a member of the library.
I'm sure other members have better info about the differences between the sites. I use Ancestry most and I still use familysearch quite a bit too.

It doesn't have exactly the same information as Ancestry. Each of them has some databases which the other doesn't have, in addition to many which they both have. But Findmypast does have the Welsh parish registers, which Ancestry doesn't have, and which you might find very useful. Many local libraries have Findmypast subscriptions and I believe some are making them available to their members to use from home at the moment. Also you should be able to have a 14-day free trial of Findmypast if you haven't had one already, but make sure to turn off auto-renewal, sorry I can't post a link but just Google for Findmypast free trial and it should come up for you.

Nick, if you have Welsh ancestry, Find My Past is a lot better than Ancestry.
It has a lot of parish registers with images. As you can see from this thread, it has Denbighshire parish records. However, be aware that if your ancestors were non-conformists they won't feature in the parish records. |

It's horses for courses, Nick.
Both sites have all the censuses and other databases in common. Find My Past has the British Newspaper Archive records, which can prove very useful. The different sites have exclusive use to records of different record offices. Ancestry is very good for London/Surrey Find My Past is essential for Devon. I find Find My Past easier to search, but that's a personal thing. On both sites you can search without paying a sub, just not see the image, which would give you an idea of what is available and what suits you.

Brilliant, thank-you all again. Lost of my family were born in the Wrexham area and therefore very welsh so I will see what FMP can also offer.
Elizabeth mentioned that Sarah Bellis was born in 1842 although her parents didn't get married until 1846. I am assuming that back then this was almost unheard of, and certainly frowned upon? I have ordered the marriage certificate for Absalom and Martha. I wonder what female prisons were like back then. Thanks again Nick |
