Merry, we have no idea what happened to Rose when the girls arrived in Canada. A late cousin remembered that a lady named Rose came to visit our grandmother every summer. She thought Rose lived some place in Northern Ontario and was sure it was a sister of Mary.
We assume both girls must have been in an orphanage, likely in Ottawa, before they were adopted. Evan Edwards and his wife, Anne, had Mary baptised at St. Patrick's in Ottawa on June 21, 1887. That would have been a five year span from the time they arrived until Mary was baptised. I have contacted St. Patrick's and the Sister there is suppose to get back to me when she checks the archives. Also, the name Mary Agnes was used the marriage record for her and our grandfather, September 23, 1903. |

So Agnes could have been added to her name at baptism?

Mary and Rose .....
We have nothing that can link them as sisters. We're just going by the records at the orphanage in London and on the ship from Liverpool to Quebec.
I was hoping St. Vincent's orphanage would be able to give us information on the two of them but apparently that will not happen. |

That could be the case and until we find the birth parent's or information from the orphanage I guess we have to wait.
Just looked at the baptism certificate and even than the name was just Mary. I think the second name, Agnes, showed up for the first time in her marriage certificate. |

Have you seen the actual image of the baptism certificate? I'm wondering if there could be any more information on it which has not been transcribed by FamilySearch?

Mary and Rose
Don't know if I posted this before, I can't find it, but this is a copy of the baptismal certificate for Mary. There was a span of five years from the time she arrived in Canada until she was baptised. I have asked St. Patrick any further information on Mary or her family but have not heard back from them at this point in time.
Would love to find out where Mary and Rose were placed until their adoption. If Rose was adopted we have no idea whom her adoptive parents were and other than my late cousin stated "Aunt Rose came to visit granny every summer and I am pretty sure she lived in Port Hope." She had also written that she did not think Rose had married or had children. Mary Edwards Gender: Female Christening Date: 21 Jun 1887 Christening Place: Saint Patrick, Ottawa, Carleton, Ontario Birth Date: Birthplace: Death Date: Name Note: Race: Father's Name: Evan Edwards Father's Birthplace: Father's Age: Mother's Name: Ann Dwyer Mother's Birthplace: Mother's Age: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: I02325-4 System Origin: Canada-EASy GS Film number: 1301812 Reference ID: Item 2 Citing this Record: "Canada, Births and Baptisms, 1661-1959," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FLLM-Q4L : accessed 15 Jan 2014), Mary Edwards, . |

What I was asking is whether you have seen the actual certificate, not just the index entry / transcription that you have copied into your post? Often the actual certificates have information which has not been transcribed by FamilySearch.

Sorry, I have not seen the original but will see if I can get it. It was my cousin in California that sent this to me.
I had asked St. Patrick's for it and this is their reply, "The baptism records you are looking for do not exist at St. Patrick's. Our records are intact from inception. Looks like the records you seek are at another church. I am sorry but I can not help beyond this. Chris" After I sent him the copy that my cousin had sent me, he wrote "Not sure what is going on here. The nun that does our registers will be in next Tuesday morning. We will pursue it then. Chris" |
