Mary Shipley married George Brown in 1847 at West Bromwich All Saints, and her father is John Shipley on FreeREG. So that all fits.

As for Thornley, did one of William's sons marry a Thornley and name a daughter after the first Emma Rebecca? (Explaining my post #10 above.)

In which case, I can't find birth regs for William and Mary's children either!

Hmm. There is a possible John Knott/Ann Thornley married in 1849, with a potential couple matching them in 1851.

I think this John is William's brother though.

FreeREG has the baptism of William Knott, son of William and Mary of Lyng, 28 Jan 1855 at Christ Church, West Bromwich. And Joseph 16 Jan 1859 at Holy Trinity, West Bromwich.

There is the baptism of a Mary Brown, daughter of George and Mary Brown, 29 Jun 1851 at Christ Church, West Bromwich, abode Moore St, father's occupation miner. Birth registered Apr-Jun 1851 MMN Shipley.

Close enough! That explains the Emma Rebecca coincidence, anyway.

Thank you.
You've just beaten me to it. I have found Mary Brown on the GRO site with MMN Shipley.

Now to find the details for William and Joseph and then the death of Elizabeth (the first wife and my direct ancestor).

Ages on the 1851 census are a bit out (or may be a different couple). Have found William's son with children that match the MMN Thornley now.

Maybe William and Joseph weren't registered.
