Hughes and Roberts
Hi
Another question if I may please? I have now swicthed to my mum's side, and struggling again. Sadly, I can no longer ask my mum so thought I would try the experts. My grandmum was Hilda Kathleen Williams (nee Hughes) (1917 to 1989). Born in Corwen to Richard Thomas Hughes and Annie Williams. I am sure my mum told me Annie was born in Manchester/Salford but that is another question I will need to ask. Richard was born in Llangollen (or Corwen) in 1887 (died in 1966) and had a brother Freddie (Frederick) born in 1889. I cannot find any further info on Freddie so that is one question. Maybe he died? I have paid subscriptions to Ancestry, FMP and Myheritage as I have been advised on this awesome forum that certain providers specialise in certain counties etc but have not had much luck wth Fred. I am also struggling with their mum and dad. Mum (GRO and census) was a Louisa Roberts (b. 1864) but I cannot find a census for 1871 (using wildcards for Louisa) and then 1881 I find a couple (as servants) but I am almost postive she was born in Ruabon so this I think might narrow it down t 2. But why can't I find 1871? In 1891 Louisa had married Thomas Hughes (b 1860), also from Ruabon and I think the marriage was in 1885 (I did find a marriage record). I think I have found a 1861 census for Thomas (https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...&rhSource=6897) which if correct gives me his parents and siblings. But how can I tell if correct or not? I could end up with a load of ancestors who are not actually ancestors, just people with the same names. Obviously Thomas Hughes was and still is a very common name. Likewise Louisa Roberts. Thanks for any help. Much appreciated. Nick |

We need to look at the Thomas Hughes / Louisa Roberts marriage record and see their fathers' names and occupations.

Their marriage is 1885 Wrexham on the GRO marriage index, but I can't find a parish record on Findmypast, so you may need to order a copy of the marriage certificate from the GRO, and you may need to wait until lockdown is over for that. Unless we can find a copy somewhere online. Otherwise it would be easy to go wrong with such common names.

Thanks kiterunner. How could I find a copy then online? I do have access to the 3 sites I mentioned. Assuming for Denbighshire the parish records will not be on myheritage nor ancestry?
Thank-you |

North Wales BMD says the 1885 marriage was a civil ceremony, so you won't find an online copy on Ancestry/FMP etc unless someone else has purchased a copy and published it.

I had a look in case someone had attached a copy of it to their family tree on Ancestry, but no luck. So you will probably need to order a copy. And the same goes for the Richard Thomas Hughes / Annie Williams marriage cert.

As for Freddie, there is a Frederick Hughes birth registered Jan-Mar 1889 Corwen district, MMN Roberts.

On the 1911 census, Frederick is Fred Hughes, a blacksmith at a brick works:
