Default John Walters

Yet another of the brick walls in my family, here's hoping you can help me.

Name - "official" name and what they were known as

John Walters

Date and place of birth

Shown variously as -

1866 Llanarthne Caernarvonshire (Probably Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire) – 1891 census
1867 Llanelly Carmarthenshire – 1901 census
1866 – from 1897 marriage certificate
1866/67 – 1910 death index entry

Following birth certificates purchased but are not “my” John Walters

December 1866 Llanelly 11a 616
March 1867 Llanelly 11a 602
June 1867 Carmarthen 11a 764

Names of parents

Father - John Walters (deceased) – from 1897 marriage certificate

Details of each of his or her marriages - if any - and any divorces*

Married Elizabeth Mary Jones on 4 March 1897 at Sardis Chapel in Pontypridd.

Occupation(s) - if any

Military service - if any*

Haven't found any

Addresses where they lived - and please list which censuses you have or haven't found him/her on, if applicable.

1891 census (Piece 4419, Folio 82, Page 27) shows him lodging with Thomas Walters and family at 1 Rheola Terrace, Trehafod. He's not shown as a relation on the census but as a boarder.

Thomas Walters b. 1826 Llanarthne, Caernarvon (Coal miner)
Ruth Walters b 1834 Ystradgynlais, Brecon
John A Walters b 1881 Llangynog, Montgomery
David F Walters b 1878 Llangynog, Montgomery
John Walters b 1866 Llanarthne, Caernarvonshire (Coal Miner)
Eleanor Thomas b 1862 Glamorganshire (Visitor)

1901 census (Piece 5010, Folio 66, Page 7) at 7 Rheola Terrace, Trehafod with family

John Walters b 1867 Coal Hewer Llanelly, Carmarthenshire
Elizabeth Walters b 1877- Glamorgan, Wales
William J Walters b 1898 - Hafod, Glamorgan, Wales
Catherine A Walters b 1899 - Hafod, Glamorgan, Wales

This might be a possible sighting in 1881 but I haven't been able to find any other trace of Hannah nor have I been able to confirm if her husband/partner was John Walters.

1881 census (Piece 5393 Folio 73 Page 12) Penywaun, Trecastle, Llanarthney

Hannah Walters Single b 1821 Stocking Knitter Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire
John Walters Son b 1863 Coal Miner Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire
William Walters Grand Son – 1879 Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire

Date, place and cause of death

He's dead by the time of the 1911 census and he and his family have moved back to Carmarthenshire (Piece 32999 – Lizzie Walters).

Carmarthen 2ndQ Vol 11a Page 638 John Walters age 43 (not purchased)

Date and place of burial / cremation.

?

Details of will / administration of their estate - if applicable

?

Memorial inscription - if any?

I had a look at the history of Thomas and Ruth Walters (1891 census) in case I could find any hint of John as a relative but nothing was apparent.

Thank you for any help or advice.

Probably doesn't help, but this is the 1861 census entry for Penywaun, Trecastell:
David Thomas Head Mar 75 Farmer Llanarthney Car
Ann Do Wife Mar 87 Farmer's Wife Llanarthney Do

I couldn't find Penywaun in 1871, only a few entries for Penywain.

And again, probably not connected, since this Hannah's age is way out from the one you found in 1881, but posting this up just in case:
1871 census

Tymawr, Trecastell, Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire
Hanah Walters Head Unm 25 Collier's Widow Carmarthen Llanarthney
John Stephens Son 8 Do Do

Getting increasingly tenuous here, but there is a John Stephens, farmer, born about 1826 Llanarthney, on the censuses up to 1891, with a wife named Rachel, living at Llanddarog, Carmarthenshire.

Interesting. Further delving turned up the following 1861 Piece 4134 Folio 79 Page 14

Hanah Walter Head Unmarried Female 34 1827 Labouring... Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire, Wales
Thomas Griffiths Son Unmarried Male 14 1847 Coal Carter Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire, Wales
William Rees Son Unmarried Male 12 1849 Coal Carter Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire
Sarah Davies Daughter - Female 7 1854 Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire, Wales

And, in 1851 Piece 2472 Folio 127 Page 22 -

Martha Jones Head Widow Female 57 1794 Kenitting Stocking Rock, Pembrokeshire
Hannah Walter Daughter Unmarried Female 25 1826 Kenitting Stocking Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire
Mary Jones Daughter Unmarried Female 17 1834 Carriaeg Coal To Town Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire
Elizabeth Jones Daughter Unmarried Female 11 1840 Pauper Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire
Thomas Griffiths Grand Son Male 4 1847 Pauper Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire
William Rees Grand Son Male 2 1849 Pauper Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire

Looks as if Hannah had several children by different fathers. I'm going to look at the possibility of John Walters being one such child.

FMP has the baptism of Thomas, son of Thomas Griffiths and Hannah Walter, 22 Dec 1846 at Llanarthne. Nothing filled in for parents' abode and occupation.

And William, son of Philip Rees and Hannah Walter, baptised at Llanarthne 6 Aug 1849. Abode is Carmglo (or something like that).

Sarah, daughter of William Davies and Hannah Walters, baptised at Llanarthne 24 Apr 1854. Abode for both parents is Penrhewl, father's occupation Smith.

I still can't see John's baptism, but there is a Harriett, daughter of Hannah Walters, baptised at Llanarthne 9 Jul 1861, abode Volgastell.

Thanks kiterunner

Looks like Hannah was a busy woman.

Will continue to dig and attempt a sideways approach to the elusive John Walters so that I can creep up on him.
