Hello, yes Bradford Yorkshire, on their children's birth certificates the maiden name is listed as Gomersal & Gumersall different variations.

This could be James in 1851:
1851 census on FMP
Ancestry was playing up so I couldn't link to it on there.

27 Abram Gate, Horton, Bradford, Yorkshire
William Reynard(?) Head Mar 39 Journeyman Carpenter Yorks Otley
Elizabeth do Wife Mar 34 Do Pudsey
Thomas Hunter Father in law Widr 73 Formerly Cloth Maker Do Do
James Sutcliffe Lodger Mar 28 Mason Do Bradford
Henry Scott Do U 24 Journeyman Carpenter Do Richmond
Thomas Booth Do U 23 Engineer Lanca Bury

On the 1851 census, the Maria Gummersall who I think is yours is unmarried, age 22, with her parents Joseph and Jane in Tong. She has a brother Robinson, and the Sutcliffe family have a son named Robinson on the 1861 census so I think this is the right Maria. But if these are the right James and the right Maria, it looks as though James was married before, so maybe his first wife was still alive when he met Maria and therefore they were not free to marry?

He is likely to be the son of this family on the 1841 census, given the father's occupation, but it would be nice to have the marriage to Maria to confirm it, if they did ever marry. Edit - Having looked some more, though, I suspect that they never did.

I don't think that this is my James :-(
I thought it maybe as there is a marriage to Sophia Dodgson in Howarth 1/7/1844
but then you can see the family on the 1861 census
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...=try&h=9876578

but my James is also on the 1861 census with Maria.

So frustrating.

Oh yes. FreeREG has the transcription of that marriage and it shows James's father as James Sutcliffe, stone mason, with Robert Sutcliffe as one of the witnesses, so you're right, that 1841 family doesn't look like the right one.
