Hmm, I've found a baptism in the Irish Catholic PR's: Glenarm parish, John Galway, son of Robert Galway and Margaret McCann, 2 Sep 1827, sponsors Wm Gibson and Catherine Mulvenna. There is a sister Peggy baptised 28 Mar 1830, also at Glenarm, sponsors Wm McMullan and Jane Nox, and another sister Anne baptised 18 Apr 1836 at St Patrick's, Belfast City (surname is spelt Galaway on that one).

But my John's army papers say he was born at Killade, near the town of Antrim, and Glenarm is nowhere near there. Also I didn't think he was a Catholic, though I can't find anything in his papers to say whether he was or not.

I have a group of shared DNA matches on ancestry; one is definitely a descendant of John Robert Galway, several are descended from a Walter John Galway Hopper who was very likely John Robert Galway's son, and a couple more have ancestors called McCann from Northern Ireland. So it looks pretty likely that the RC baptism at Glenarm with mother Margaret McCann is the right one for my John.
