Default (35) Ernest Austen 2nd Lieutenant 14th Hussars

35th of the Old Boys of St Wilfrid's school, Haywards Heath to lose his life in the Great War.

Son of George and Harriet Austen, and brother of Leon Guy Austen who also lost his life in WW1.

In 1871 the Austens lived in Kents Road, Haywards Heath and father George was a boot & shoemaker, the family had moved to Triangle Road by 1881 and George had 2 employees, but by 1901 he was running The Heath pub at the end of Triangle Road.

Ernest was born and baptised at Wivelsfield in 1870, (Kents Road was then in that parish). He was with his parents on the 1871 and 1881 census, then became a professional soldier - he was at a barracks in Heston, Middlesex as a corporal in 1891.

Ernest does not appear on the 1901 census as he was serving in South Africa.

He married Charlotte Cresswell Coles, (a Haywards Heath girl who had also attended St Wilfrid’s school) on 12th December 1903 at Hornsey, Middlesex, when he was described on his marriage certificate as a Sergeant.

He served in India from about 1905 and had risen to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant at the time of his death there at Banglaore on 25 August 1916; he is buried at the Meerut Cantonment Cemetery plot 2 grave 250.

He left 4 children, his widow Charlotte returned from India with them aboard P&O ship Nagoya in November 1917. She never re-married and lived to be 93. Ernest left £578 in his will. At 46 he was the oldest of our former pupils on the Roll of Honour board.
