Default Missing from the 21 Census?

William Thomas Brown was living at 5 Hadley Street St Pancras in 1920:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...2&pId=76854026

With him were father William George, mother Hilda and - too young to vote, but almost certainly under the same roof - brother Gordon Reginald. Hilda was born in 1868 and Gordon in 1902.

William Thomas married late in 1921, but the other three did not move for several years. (and WTB continued to live in the same street)

The Coles family were at the same address.

Using the address search on FMP gives only one family at no 5 and that is the Coles. Looking at Hildas living with Gordons doesn't throw up anything useful.

The logical conclusion seems to be that either no form was delivered, or the entire family was away and just escaped the census. Any bright ideas?

Totally agree, OC. And in London. I suspect his fiancee was under the same roof, as I can't find her either.

Ooh, looking more closely, their schedule nos go 1,2,3,5. IE 4 (which would cover No 5 Hadley Street) is missing.

I have emailed FMP. Of course, I imagine that the forms were pre-numbered, so may have been lost in antiquity.

Perhaps leaving out the house number on the search might help.

I'm now fairly sure, Julie, that the schedule was either not returned, or not filmed by FMP.

Could be they were away on holiday? It was the middle of June.

I did wonder that, Kite, but I suspect that if they did take a family holiday, it would be around August.

Have you checked they aren't indexed as Coles? If they were perhaps the first family listed, they may all be listed as Coles. My great grandparents lived with my great grandmother's brother and their children. My 2xGG Uncle owned the house and was at the top of the form, but listed as brother of Head (GGF was listed as head) but the whole family were indexed under 2GG Uncle's surname and not their own.

I also came across my Aunt's father indexed under his step father's surname. Haven't purchased it for her but I suspect on the original he'll probably be under the correct surname and just wrongly indexed again.

The speaker at a recent talk invited me to send the specific query to him.

They can tell me that the start of the volume was in poor condition and schedule four is missing from the finished article. They have promised to come back and tell me whether it was missing from the volume, or just not filmed. Result!
