You probably know Lindsay, that puerperal fever is related to childbirth.

Have you checked for a birth (and possibly death) of a child in the same quarter?

Yes, I did have a look, Tom (admittedly not very intensively), but I couldn't see a matching birth/death.

In fact, Elizabeth doesn't seem to have had any children for several years before she died - perhaps she had a series of miscarriage/stillbirths.

Edited to add - h'mm, I hadn't looked at this for a while but it does seem odd; Elizabeth had 7 children in 10 years (at least 5 of whom survived), the last one in 1839 then no more children till she dies of puerperal fever in 1851. Mind you, with a married name like Johnson they're hard to identify.

As you say it is possible that there were complications.

She would have been about 43 when she died, so possible that it was complications with a birth. If the birth was a still birth it wouldn't be in the indexes.
