Register of Graves: William Newton. Staley.

William's will is extremely detailed and enabled me to piece together the families. He very helpfully states:
"And as to one other eighth part or share thereof upon trust to pay the same unto my nephew James Newton of London (who married my daughter Jane) for his own absolute use "
His daughter Jane had already died.

Therefore OH is descended from both William Newton and his older brother Joseph Newton.

From the Saddleworth entry in Pigot's Directory 1829, according to GENUKI:

Shopkeepers & Dealers in Groceries & Sundries:
Newton William, Slaithwaite.

If your William was already living in Cheshire by then, I wonder if that could be his father? Or maybe your William still owned a shop back home but had someone to run it for him.

Oh, there's some stuff about a William Newton who lived in Lydgate around 1780 on this site; maybe he'll turn out to be related eventually:

The White Hart at Lydgate

Hi Kiterunner, thanks for your posts.

I'll bear this William Newton in mind and note down the details. I have lots of information of this kind!

We went in the White Hart when we paid a fleeting visit to Saddleworth. The pub is right opposite the church. I took some photos of some historical pictures/documents on the wall. Someone in the pub spoke to us as they said they knew about the history of the pub (a John Newton held it for a while) but they didn't really know much.

We have to be very careful in this district as Newton is one of the most common names around and there are inevitably lots of Williams, James and Johns.

I'm trying to tie in an Isaac Newton as well, who was down in London as a Fire Brick Merchant in 1841, the same profession as Joseph Newton, the brother of William! I wondered if he could be an uncle or father to the men.

I do seem to go round in circles with this lot. There is a strong chance they were non-conformist too, as William's daughter Jane was baptised as an adult at Mossley New Connection.

By the way, there were ties with the Buckley family, and one of the later descendants of Joseph Newton was Edward Buckley Newton.

By the way, I wondered if the William Newton and the Joseph Newton on the 1811 census for Mossley were the two brothers, before Joseph Newton went to London.

http://www.tamesidefamilyhistory.co....susmossley.htm

Also, I have wondered whether this is Joseph Newton, brother of William:

Joseph Newton

The London Gazette Issue 17037 published on 8th July 1815
“Notice is hereby given, that the Partnership between the late John Starkie, deceased, and the undersigned Nathaniel Buckley, Abel Buckley, Sarah Buckley, Margaret Buckley, and Joseph Newton, in the business of Woollen-Clothiers, carried on under the firm of Starkie, Buckley, and Newton, of Huddersfield, in the County of York, and under the firm of Buckley, Newton, and Company, at Wood, in Stayley, in the County of Chester, was this day dissolved by mutual consent; and the all debts owing to or by the concern shall be received and paid by the said Nathaniel Buckley.

Dated the 26th day of June 1815

John Whitaker,
John Edwards,
Wm. Marshall,
Executors of the late John Starkie, deceased,
Nath. Buckley,
Abel Buckley,
Sarah Buckley,
Margaret Buckley,
Joseph Newton.”

This is Joseph Newton:
London Post Office Directory 1829
Jos. Newton Fire brick-merchant 15 Holland st. Blackfriars Road (south side of the river, just a few streets from Bankside)

One of the witnesses to the marriage of James Newton, the son of Joseph Newton, in 1836 in Southwark was Philip Buckley.

I have now added William Newton's parents - his mother was Hannah Buckley!

No, Julie, I can't remember the name at the moment.

Oldham was the large town where we parked in a multi-storey carpark. The town wasn't very nice but the church was very impressive and I have just discovered I photographed lots of Buckley gravestones! (But it's a very common name.)
