Default James Downham

OHs FMFF:

Name: James DOWNHAM
Date and place of birth: either 1796 [based on age at burial] or 1806 [based on age at 1841 census] born in Gloucestershire [according to 1841 census]

Date and place of baptism: Not known
Married: Eliza DEAN 12 Jul 1824 Southwark St Saviour, Surrey by Banns. Both of the parish, both single. Witnesses: James Rumment[?] and Mary Dean.
[If born 1806 – then he would have been just 18 at marriage. Eliza was born 1801 Gloucestershire]
Occupation(s):
1826 Gardener
1829 Shop keeper
1832 Innkeeper
1836-9 Publican

On son’s marriage certificate in 1851 his occupation is given as Carpenter [but was dead by this time so could be fabricated]
Addresses where they lived:
1824 – Southwark St Saviour [on marriage]
1826 – Mitcham, Surrey [when sons baptised]
1829 – Shurdington, Gloucestershire [baptism of child]
1841 Census: New Inn, High Street, Great Shurdington, Gloucestershire - living with wife and family
1843 – Shurdington, Gloucestershire

Date of Death: 11 August 1843 at Great Shurdington
Death Certificate states he was 47 years old, an Innkeeper and cause of death was "Decline".
Date and place of burial: 17 Aug 1843, Shurdington, Glos, aged 47.
Details of will: Not known
Memorial inscription: Not known

I have to confess that I last looked at this line pre-internet days, when I decided a crystal ball would be needed to get any further Listing this out has inspired me to have a fresh look at this line. I still cannot find his baptism on the IGI. Perhaps I should get the death certificate to see why he died so young.

Just got the the death certificate for James and it states the cause of death as "Decline". It was not certified by a doctor.

Has anyone come across this cause before? Could it be depression?

Hi Sabrina, I am furiously searching through the research that I did for my step sister and also for my husband because somewhere in there is someone who died of "Decline". I do remember that it had nothing at all to do with state of mind, it was definitely physical.

If and when I find it, I will let you know!

Got it!!!!

Decline was a general term used to describe a gradual wasting away due to a disease. More often than not, Consumption.

Hey, I knew I had it somewhere!

Thank you for finding that Sally, that is really interesting.

I know that is a very contagious disease and as one of his daughters died earlier the same year and another the year before that, perhaps they also had it. Now, if certificates were cheaper...... !! I don't know if it was significant, but the person who registered his death, and was present at death, was not a relative (as far as I can tell).
