Caroline - that was the only place I could think of, but it din't help when I looked back.

Sue, I'm assuming she was a spinster as her dad was W J Holt, but with this lot anything is possible!! I have asked my contact if dad had an occ on the marriage cert.

This ref must be for her: RG12 piece 3709 folio 106 page 22

She's in Headingley in 1891 and Dad is Willaim James Holt, a wholesale drapery merchant

Whoops, I just typed all you just typed! lol Thank you so much - I'm pretty sure that is her as dad's job is the 'right sort of thing' to fit with wat she was (supposed) to have been like according to gran! (dau of trade! pmsl!!!)

Oooh, Ellen/Nellie was at a Ladies School in Hendon in 1901. That would account for her lack of Yorkshire accent, perhaps??!!!

Indeed!! Thanks to the census image!

It seems a little strange that she changed her first name to Nellie, as to me Helen or Ellen sound more sophisticated than Nellie and Nellie was desparate to become more sophisticated.

Actually having said that.......Sadly Nellie's only child was killed in WW2 and on the CWGC details he is given as the son of Helen.
