I have added details of Martha Wood's memorial stone.
The stone no longer stands in the churchyard, but on my recent trip to Lincolnshire Archives I viewed the following booklet: Plans of churchyard and detailed lists of graves, tombstones and inscriptions Reference Name SCOTTON PAR/8/5 Produced by Revd HE von Sturmer, rector, in 1884, with annotations to 1978. Date: 1884-1978 Repository: Lincolnshire Archives [057] Martha's grave was sketched and a plan of the graveyard is given with her grave marked so I know where she was buried. Even when her grave was sketched, the bottom of it was crumbling. The booklet records that her three infant sons, all named Edward, were buried with her.

How lovely to read such a complete account. Interested to see the name Newbourn. I've come across it several times (with various spellings) in Lincolnshire records. Also, Newlove used as a first name. Wonder if it's a Lincolnshire thing?

Shona, I've grown very fond of this branch of my mother's tree. I think I was rather taken with the Christian name "Newbourn" too.
I just need to find the ancestry of Henry Newbourn, a mariner, who was married at East Retford, Notts., and lived latterly and was buried at Hemswell. His will shows he had land at Haxey, but I can't find an appropriate baptism yet. There are lots of Newbourn(e)s at Haxey and the surrounding area. I think Newbourn is very much a Lincolnshire name. However, the custom of giving children an unusual Christian name coming from a surname seems to be prevalent all over the country. In the same Wood family, I have a son named "Gawthrop" or "Gawthorp" Wood after his mother's maiden name.
