John was born in Liverpool, which conveniently narrows down the John Jones numbers in that area of Wales.
I have him in 1851 Ho107 2575 202 page13 I cannot be 100% certain that is him, but I can find no other entry that fits

I have certificates and census records to identify him with Ann 2
The certificates show him as a Mining Contractor, and that is what he is shown as on the census records as detailed at the top of the thread. Also, the address is on a couple of the certs.

Oh, I'm sure I've seen the Quarry labourer in 1861 - I didn't think it was an important enough job to become a mine contractor so ignored it!

I have just found John and Ann the first in 1861.........can't think how I missed them before. Interestingly, they are with a Robert Roberts - a name that crops up when Ann the second was a visitor in 1851, but none of the birth dates match unfortunately!
You are now making me doubt the validity of this first wife, although I was so sure that it was correct......drat I will check everything right from the beginning tomorrow. Thank goodness the most important player in the form of Ann the second is correct.

Oh, now I don't know, as in 1871 that family are still together at the same place again. Just this time they have forgotten the husband was from Liverpool!

I can't find anything to follow up Grace (in particular). If she died/married then it was not in Glamorgan.

Hi Merry, just come back on and am about to delete Ann the first because she is clearly not right.
To answer your question, yes, Catherine stayed in Wales: In 1881 she was a servant at 5 Bowens Court, Merthyr Tydfil. On 13th July 1883 she married Evan Jenkins in the Register Office, Cardiff 1891 they were in Bedwas, Monmouthshire 1901 Crown Hotel, Fleur de lys, Mon. 1911 Crawshays Arms, Mon. Thomas Morgan Jenkins, one of their children and who was the next down in the family tree, also stayed in Wales.

I am now going to try to find John and/or wife Ann Harris prior to 1871 - there may be more marriage options that those two in the 1860s, although given Ann's age there surely cannot be many more.
Update No thank goodness, there are still just the two possible marriages. Hmm, which to go for.....eeny meeny miny mo! Would she have married at 17 or 20? Would there not have been huge opposition to her marrying a man almost old enough to be her father? Is that why they are hiding in 1861?
