Best fit?

Deaths Dec 1903
Tyler Sarah 85 Bethnal Green 1c 133

and would this, below, give you her maiden name and help you find the family in 1861 (if the area isn't a missing one!!)?

Births Mar 1861
Tyler Rachel Whitechapel 1c 378

There's a marriage 27th Jan 1851 which I realise is 10 years too late, but is between William Joseph Tyler, broad silk weaver, and Sarah Edwards at St Barts, Bethnal Green. The witnesses are Henry Smith and Elizabeth Williams. Of the bride, groom and witnesses only Henry Smith signs his name. Unfortunately, the address given isn't where they were living on the 1851 census - for the marriage both give 18 Cudworth Street.

On the marriage cert Sarah Edwards gives her father's details as John Edwards, Seaman.

There's a bap at St Matthew, Bethnal Green, 29th May 1818 for a girl named Sarah b 20th April 1818 the dau of John and Mary Edwards. John is a Mariner.

Obviously everything above hangs on the 1861 birth cert!! lol

oooh blimey thanks for the 1861 census I didn't find it but sometimes I do get distracted with other people and go off on a tangent if it's not easily found after a bit.

Rachel Tyler is my OH's great grandmother. I haven't got the birth cert yet because there were more pressing certs I needed i.e. my family but yes that's one way of finding her maiden name. So I suppose I'd better do that and I think I'll order it today!!! if I want to go back a bit further now on the Tylers and Sarah - got a bit stuck on that one.

Well that marriage is likely I'll check it out a bit of a coincidence if it's not them. Not obvious who Henry Smith and Elizabeth Williams is at the moment. They don't appear to be professional witnesses from what I can see.

Thanks for your help Merry.

Edit to say I had assumed they married around 1840 because their first child Sarah was born 1941 - but in FH we shouldn't assume anything should we! and also that death looks likely for Sarah so I think I'll order that while I'm about it.

Well I'd just checked out their children to consider Sarah's mother's name and the sequence goes:-
Sarah
Mary Ann
Emily Susanna
Jane
William
John
Henry John
Rachel

So I had just decided perhaps her mother's name was Mary Ann as William Joseph's was Sarah too and that's their first daughter's name.

You are lucky to find naming patterns in your London families. I've never found any in mine, except for the likelyhood of one or more child being named for a parent.

On OH's side they seem to follow the normal pattern in a lot of the families. First son after paternal grandfather, first and second daughters and sons after Paternal grandmother and maternal grandparents unless of course they have too many daughters or sons and then they seem to name them after their siblings until the right sex comes along to start the pattern again.

Edit to say: so now you've found a likely baptism for Sarah I'll check the names Emily Susanna and Jane at St Matthew! Don't know where those names come from to be honest could be names of Sarah's siblings perhaps - probably a long shot.
