Hmmm, there is an extracted IGI entry for a Sarah Harrison baptism at Marston Montgomery, 7 Apr 1833, parents Thomas and Mary, but there are some submitted entries giving the mother's maiden names as Land. And anyway, Marston Montgomery isn't very near Bradley, though not very far either.

She was always very consistant about being born in Bradley on all census. Bradley does have it's own church so why go anywhere else. Maybe she wasn't baptised.
I have baptisms for her 4 older siblings at All Saints, Bradley taken from the actual parish register. Nothing for Sarah and her younger brother William born in 1835.

I see that no-one has managed to find that elusive marriage to William Yates yet.

I will be totally shocked if anyone finds one

Oh, I forgot to say that William seemed to have been baptised as Joseph but always known as William.

Maybe William Yates married someone else after 1861 and before he and Sarah got together?

What do you mean Merry?

Are you suggesting that William wasn't free to marry Sarah? If so, I hadn't considered that.

Just checked FreeBMD for marriages of William Yates between 1861 and 1866 in Ashbourne.

It only comes up with one. Dec qtr 1865. Possible females are:

Mahala Frost
Mary Frost
Emma Gratton
Ann Roper

That's a bit close to the birth of John William Yates who supposedly was the eldest son of William and Sarah.
He was registered Dec qtr 1865

John William was baptised as the child of William and Sarah at St Chad's, Longford on 29th July 1966

I was just thinking that the most usual reason for not marrying was probably that one or other (or both!) party wasn't free to marry. Obviously it could be either of them, but if it was Sarah there might be a chance she would admit to the previous surname on one of her childrens birth certs. I suppose it would be fairly impossible to even consider looking for such a marriage for sarah as there would be so many, but vaguely possible to do so for William Yates (as you have done, but not really found anything). What about looking for Joseph Yates?

I have Thomas Henry Yates, my great grandfather, it says parents William Yates and Sarah formerly Harrison.
I also have the birth cert of Sarah's illegitimate daughter with Anthony Roe, Mary.
Anthony wasn't named on the birth cert but was named on the baptism record.
