NOTES

1787
Florence, natural daughter to Hugh Milloy and Margt (Peggy) Beaton, at Gaigan. Married 1787. Many Beatons emigrated to Canada following rent increases in the 1830s. Gaigan is another name for the farm of Beachmore. The ruins of Achapharick are on Beachmore land.

1815
Neil Downie of Achfaric recorded in the ledgers of Campbeltown plumber and coppersmith, Robert Armour, as buying distilling equipment. 1851 census - John Downie, aged 60, weaver, living at Auchapharick with 80-year-old stepmother, Grace Downie. Other members of the Downie family were part of a collective of cottars who ran a large illicit still at a neighbouring village. Many of them fled to Canada to escape justice in 1817.

1815
Duncan McLean, John McKinvin and John McIntaggart of Achafaric bought distilling equipment from Robert Armour.

1816
John Milloy recorded in the ledgers of Duncan McNiven, merchant at Crubasdale, Killean, as paying for goods with whisky.

1829
Malcolm Milloy jnr of Gaigan was charged with theft of illegal malt which excisemen had secured at Killean Manse after it had been found at Malcolm Blue's mill at Clachaig. Milloy fled and was declared a fugitive. Possibly went to Canada.

1850
Three tuns containing 200 gallons of wash were discovered by excisemen in Robert McSporran's garden at 'Auchafarrick'. The garden was overlooked by the house of his brother, John, also a farmer. They were the main suspects, but there were six other houses, occupied by servants and cottars, on the boundary between the two McSporran farms. The brothers denied any knowledge of illicit whisky making. Both charged, but the case was dismissed.
