Default Train Book Boy

Does anyone know what a Train Book Boy would have done on the Victorian railway? I can't find any references to it online.

By Googling, I found "The Database - Railwaymen & Women of the North London Railway" which has a lot of references to Train Book Boys, including the following entry about one of them:

fined 6d for not entering arrival and departure of trains in the book properly.
