real name / birth certificate
I am sat with my sister in law who was adopted - she knows her birth name and wants to know her details ..can someone PM me please and I will pass her details over ....she was born in 1969 and for her birth name the last one shows 1967 on freebmd ...so I presume hers isn`t transcribed yet ...thanks
also - she wants to know just our of curiosity - can she - if she wanted - go and get her real birth certificate ?...and if so - how can she prove who she was ?...would she need adoption papers - her adoptive mother died 10 years ago ...and she is puzzled what to do legally to get her birth cert thanks allan

just an update to let you know - we have the birth certificate - Sister in law wants to know - does the law allow her to use her birth name and if so - would the system give her a new National Insurance number ???....an unusual request I know - but she did ask me this ?...and I don`t know the answer

You don't need a new National Insurance number if you change your name, Allan. It would cause a lot of problems if you did, because your contributions would be on your old number.

Legally she can use any name she wants to, although these days it's probably easier to do it officially as she will need a paper trail for various suspicious authorities! I agree with Kate that she doesn't need a new NI and in fact that would cause her more problems than it would solve. OC |

thank you both - what about a passport she has asked me ...can she apply for a passport in her birth name ?...I said because she had her birth certificate , she could - but that would mean her having TWO passports ??...she finds the thought of this exciting ...lol...

If she already has a passport, she couldn't apply for a "first adult passport" in a different name, but she can ask for the name in her existing passport to be changed. The guidelines say that she would have to provide proof of her change of name.
https://www.gov.uk/government/upload...ce-booklet.pdf If she just pretended that she was a different person and applied for another passport in her birth name, she would be breaking the law. |
