I hope I will have some more clues when I get that marriage certificate. There are so many Emmotts in Cowling.
BBC history "During the Norman time land was I have the Cowling Local History Society book, Cowling: A Moorland Parish by Alec Wood. I should reread it for clues. |

Robert is widowed on the 1861 census, isn't he? So Nancy must have died between 1853 and 1861. Could possibly be the Ann Pickles whose death was registered Oct-Dec 1859 Skipton district (as that was the district for Cowling.) Or have you already ruled that one out?

It turns out I had the memorial inscription all along (!), from an English cousin who made the rounds years ago. Having found that information I was then able to fill in a lot more. Bella, by the way, was a daughter who died in infancy.
So Kite you were quite right with the 1859 death that you found. That is surely her. Even before I found the MI I had already eliminated every other possibility quite exhaustively, and then the NBI confirmed it. Now that I'm sure what I'm looking for, maybe somebody with a public tree will have posted the cert to Ancestry. So I'm not going to rush to spend money, I'll look around first. But thanks again! Still waiting, of course, for the 1847 cert from her first marriage. Will keep you posted. Last edited by Janet; 02-05-16 at 06:41. |

I now have in hand the 11 August 1847 certificate from her first marriage, to John Emmott:
1847, Marriage solemnized at Register Office, Skipton in the District of Skipton Union in the County of York I have more than one reason to believe this is the right person. Father's name and occupation match those on her marriage to Robert Pickles. Both ceremonies are non-con. She is a weaver on both (and also on the 1851 census I think is her, so another point in favor of that census appearance too). She also makes her mark at both marriages. So, unless somebody contradicts me, I think this is right. |

Ann (Nancy) Harker (Emmott) PICKLES Death
Date, place and cause of death - 1859, Cowling (from MI and NBI), cause unknown
According to Ann (Nancy) Pickles death certificate she died of Pulmonary Consumption 25th Oct 1859 There was certainly some confusion in our family tree as Robert Pickles first wife was Ann Emmott. Born 1826. They were married 14th Oct 1841. Her father was a John and Mary Emmott from Great House Farm Cowling. She died 11 May 1845 after the birth of her third child Ann from "the rash" aged 19. |
