Default Amelia Meffen/Mepham NATION.

This is my mystery......lol

Name.
Amelia Meffen/Mepham NATION

Date and Place of birth.
9th Oct 1852, Lochinvar, NSW, Australia.

Parents.
John Nation and Phoebe Martin/Mepham/Nation.

Marriage.
16th March 1871, Maitland, NSW to John Charles Grant.

Death
25th Sep 1929, Oakey, Qld.

Now my mystery is.............

Phoebe Martin married Benjamin Mepham in Sussex, UK, 16th Oct 1835. They had one child, also Benjamin.
The three came to Australia.

Phoebe later got together with John Nation and had a further 7 children. Amelia was the 5th.

Benjamin Mepham senior was still alive.

I have never found a marriage for Phoebe and John Nation.

Now why would Phoebe and John name their 5th child after Phoebe's still very much alive husband????????? (Mepham)

There were another two children later.

I suppose John Nation wasn't Benjamin Mepham senior using a false name?

No Kate. Positive sightings of both.......lol

John Nation died in 1859....have the cert.
Benjamin Mepham senior died 1883 aged 71.

Phoebe went on to marry Thomas McDermott......in 1860 under the name of Phoebe Mappin (Mepham) so obviously didn't marry John Nation at all.

It's only Amelia's second name is bugging me.

Can't imagine too many men allowing their partners to name a child after the ex......
