Default WW1 Silver War Badge records - ancestry

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=2456

Awarded to military personnel who were discharged for wounds or sickness, up to 31 Dec 1919. These records include rank, regimental number, unit, dates of enlistment and discharge, and reason for discharge. If your rellie's medal index card says SWB on it, there should be an entry to find.

Annoying that the regimental number appears on the result list, but it isn't posssible to use this number as search criteria. I wonder why not?

I've found my Grandfather's record and it doesn't tell me anything that wasn't on his medal card. But having looked at some other medal cards I seem to have been very lucky in the amount of information that was on his card - including an address to where the badge was to be sent!

The SWB roll usually gives you date of enlistment, which I don't think is usually on the medal index card.

My G'father's Medal Card - as I said, very informative! He was only in the Army for 5 months due to very weak lungs which killed him at a relatively young age and I'm wondering if the authorities had to make a lot of checks to find his service records before awarding the Badge - hence the detail!!
