Date and place of birth – abt 1787, Great Witley, Worcestershire Names of parents – Thomas and Elizabeth (nee Berry?) Ball Date and place of baptism - 6 May 1787, Great Witley, Worcestershire Details of each of his or her marriages – to a Mr Jones? , probably abt 1810 in Worcestershire Occupation(s) - Addresses where they lived (including county if in UK) - and please list which censuses you have or haven't found him/her on (if s/he lived in census times!). Daughter was baptised in Hillhampton, Great Witley, Worcestershire in 1813 Date, place and cause of death – not found, but her daughter was living with Mary’s parents in 1841 census. There is a death for Mary Ball in Martley reg dist in Mar qtr 1872. Date and place of burial - unknown Details of will / administration of their estate - unknown Memorial inscription - unknown Daughter Susan(na) http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/f...ht=susan+jones Looking at her daughter’s thread again, I realised that I still hadn’t got her marriage certificate. It’s now on my ‘to do list’. I can't remember how or why I decided that Mary Ball and Mary Jones were the same person. I don't appear to have any notes on this.

Surely if she married a Mr Jones then her death should be Mary Jones not Mary Ball?

Yes I suppose so, but I wonder whether Mr Jones was a figment of her imagination and just listed on her daughter's baptism.
I will send off for her daughter's marriage certificate to see if there is a father listed on there.

So is this the baptism?
Susannah Jones Gender: Female Baptism/Christening Date: 18 Jul 1813 Baptism/Christening Place: GREAT WITLEY,WORCESTER,ENGLAND Mother's Name: Mary Jones Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C04214-1 System Origin: England-ODM Source Film Number: 596845, 596846 No father's details on it, but maybe you have seen the original? Not sure why you wouldn't expect the mother to have been born Mary Jones if she was single and Susannah was illegitimate?

In 1851 she is unmarried again and has a son William Ball aged 27. In 1841 she is with her son William 19 and an Ann Ball aged 50. So, assuming the 1861 has the wrong marital status, I can see she is likely to be the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Ball, but I can't see why she would be the mother of Susannah Jones.

Yes Merry, that is the baptism, and no I haven't seen the original.
My aunt, and other more distant relatives, have her down as Mary Ball. One of Mary's grandsons, Susannah's son, was Thomas Ball Key. His father was Thomas Blainey Key, and some other family members were given their mother's maiden name as a middle name. Possibly this is where the assumption came from that Susannah's mother was Mary Ball. I have now ordered Susannah & Thomas Blainey Key's marriage certificate, so hopefully that will list her father's name. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Yes, probably and it may turn out to be right - or perhaps Thomas and Eliz Ball took in Susannah as a child and brought her up, but she wasn't their granddaughter!
When I looked for the baptism I came across a John Jones, son of (apparently single) Susannah Jones bap in 1819 (might have been 1820?!) at Great Witley - I wondered if this mum was sister to Mary Jones and they both had illegitimate children (as in my tree it does seem to run in families!!) - Then Mary would have been naming her child for her sister! Probably all just coincidences given that Jones is a common name. In any case, John Jones appears 1841-1881 and has a wife, Hannah, but never helpfully shows up with an ageing mother, Susannah, with an age and birth place to enable us to see if she ever had a sister Mary! lol I suppose mose people had a sister called Mary in those days though

The full PR entry for the baptism may give more information about Mary Jones such as spinster, widow, or whatever.
