It's the first time I have actually seen "dead" written to someones name on a census though.
Have you got the image? I'll sent it to you if not.

Yes, a white line on the right hand side, it says dead on the left in tiny writing, just near his name.

I'll email it to you anyway.

Oh right never noticed on the other , will have to send for that birth Merry found and but that father has to be John and if mother is Maria nee Griffiths that I already have it ;; thats the only birth to be found wasnt it ;;
The only trouble is I found that family in usk and followed them and there George was still with them in 1881 so couldnt be mine ;;

That birth might be the one you already have, make sure you don't get the same one twice, I've done that before.

Can I summarise what we have (and don't have)

I've been having another look at the possible 1861 census we found

RG9; Piece: 3974; Folio: 56; Page: 11

They are living in Chepstow reg district. There are quite a few possible births in Cheptow if you look at FreeBMD. I was just looking at Pontypool before. It's just his age that is inconsistant.

On the 1861, John the dad was aged 26 born in Gloucestershire. Wife Mary age 23 born in Bally???????, Ireland. George age 2 and Ellen age 6 months.

1871 census, same family I think. RG10; Piece: 2572; Folio: 74; Page: 20

John aged 38 born in Old??? Gloucestershire, wife Mary age 36 born in Casweet?, Monmouthshire (different wife????????) George age 12, Ellen 11 and so on.

Fast forward to 1881 where Babs is sure its the right person.
RG11; Piece: 4861; Folio: 23; Page: 42
aged 29.....................or is he?? Is he aged 20 like the person below him?

1891 aged 38 RG12; Piece: 4018; Folio 27; Page 47

His wife is a widow in 1901 and 1911. Where is his death? There is no death in Middlesbrough that fits.
