George Locke, seaman
Caroline Sarah Walter was born in Portsmouth in 1860, daughter of George Walter and Elizabeth Robinson.
She married George Locke 5 October 1879 at St Marys Portsea. George was described as a seaman, son of Alfred Johnson Locke, painter. George's address was HMS Excellent, Caroline living at 27 Brighton Street Portsea. https://search.findmypast.co.uk/reco...2F00183149%2F2 In 1881, Caroline's name is given as Catherine and she is a sailor's wife aged 21, lodging at 61 Belgrave St with daughters Catherine [Caroline Elizabeth Boon WALTERS]  aged 3 and Ada aged 6 monthshttps://search.findmypast.co.uk/reco...1%2F0005568221 By 1891 Caroline is at 1 Riga Terrace aged 32 and the family has expanded to include George Walter Aylmer Locke b 1885 and Charles Alma Everett Locke b 1889 https://search.findmypast.co.uk/reco...1%2F0006707780 Little Charles was buried 2 May 1891 from Wellington Row Landport. It looks as if the family moved to West Ham: Charles William was born 1893 and buried 20 January 1893 in Newham Caroline Sarah was buried 24 January 1893 in Newham, aged 32. George Walter was bp 12 February 1893 at Harrow Green, West Ham and by 1901 was in the navy. He actually signed up for 12 years in 1903. Ada was baptised at the same time George the father was born 22 December 1855 in St Pancras, according to his naval record: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...438&pId=792153 It looks as if George remarried: to Jessie Esslemont in Aberdeen, according to a couple of online trees, when he gave his parents' names as George Locke and Caroline Sarah Green So, can anyone find George on any census before 1901? Or his birth? Or his baptism?

Do you know what he gave his father's occupation as on the marriage to Jessie?
There is this family in 1861: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...ce&pId=5259767 Starts right at the bottom of the page and continues on the next one. Father is George Lock, 30, a plasterer, born Pancras, mother Harriet 34, born Tenterden, Kent, children James 15, Harriet 11 (both born Middlesex St Martins), and George 7.

This looks to be the baptism for the George from the 1861 census:

George Locke, 40, Petty Officer, Royal Navy, m, Jessie Esslemont, 26, Spinster, on 20/4/1895 at 169 King Street, Aberdeen. His parents were George Locke, Soldier, decd, and Caroline Sarah Locke nee Green, decd.
George's usual address was also recorded as HMS Clyde, Aberdeen. This must be the right man. merleyone

Ooh, I hate families like this. If that is the right George (and he is nearly two years older than he claims to be) then his mother's name is wrong in all aspects. I cannot find a Lock/Watson marriage. I cannot find the other children in 1851. (presumably prior to Harriet's liaison with George Locke senior.) I cannot find a George Lock marriage to Harriet Elizabeth. I cannot find George senior in 1851. Nor, of course, does he spring to the attention in 1871.Nor does George junior.

This could be George sr in 1871, at St Giles in the Fields - in 1861, I think his age had been changed from 26 to 30.

There is a Harriet Emily Mansfield baptised 20 Dec 1849 at St Martin in the Fields, dob 25 Nov, mother Harriet Elizabeth Mansfield, workhouse. On the GRO birth index the MMN is a - indicating illegitimate. There is also a James Mansfield (James Mansfield Mansfield, according to the GRO website) birth registered Apr-Jun 1845 St Martin, also with MMN -. I haven't found his baptism yet. But they do fit nicely with the older children on the 1861 census.
