New Zealand records
My great-grandmother's brother, FRED WOOD QUINTRELL, shot himself with his revolver in 1901 in Centennial Park, Sydney. It is stated he had been in NSW for 3 months.
I have this: First name(s) Fred Wood Last name Quintrell Electoral year 1893 Number 2664 Occupation Shepherd Residence Upton Downs Electorate Wairau Type Residential Country New Zealand Record set New Zealand electoral rolls Category Census, Land & Surveys Subcategory Electoral Rolls Collections from Australia & New Zealand so it seems he was in New Zealand for a while. Are there any more NZ records that mention him, please? |

There are Frederick Quintrell marriages in 1892 (to Catherine Ann Ball) and 1899 (to Lizzie Gertrude Sussex) and some births for the children of each marriage, but the births with Lizzie Gertrude as the mother go up to 1908 so I guess it is a different man.

Thanks, Kate. Probably a different man as at his death and inquest it is stated he is unmarried.
I wonder how long he was in New Zealand. |

There is another Fred Quintrell here who was involved in musical direction and orchestras, so it is probably his marriage. I cannot see newspaper reports that would fit your man

Thanks for looking, Chris.
There was another distant relative called Fred Quintrell who left Cornwall to go to New Zealand. I have a book written by his son. It is intitled "Horse Shoes to Dog Collars". Fred was from Gerrans where my ancestors lived, and we share common ancestors. He was the fourth child of Sidney and Margery Quintrell, and he was baptised as Frederick. He became a minister. My mother became friends with the family and they visited her when the came to England. |

The New South Wales Gazettes for 1892 list a FW Quintrell in Burke.
I cannot find any evidence of him in NZ aside from that electoral roll that you all ready have Australian newspaper reports of his death say that he had a note addressed to the coroner pinned to him, that said he had 12 pound in the savings bank and after his burial expenses had been paid, the rest was to go to the children's hospital. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/a...ed%20quintrell

Thanks, Chris.
The book I have was written by his son S.T. (Stanley Trevor) Quintrell. It's over 120 pages long and very detailed. Fred's wife Catherine died after the birth of their second child, William Egbert, from septicaemia, in the 7th year of their marriage. Last edited by ElizabethHerts; 31-08-20 at 21:16. |

My great-grandmother was most affected by his death. My mother had a photo of his grave in his possession, which I now have, though it has deteriorated. Luckily I had already scanned it. I think he had relationship problems. |

What a lovely thing for him to think of whilst contemplating his own suicide.
How sad. |
