Default (63)Arthur Charles Barnett, 21629 Duke of Edinburgh’s (Wiltshire) Regiment

63rd of the Old Boys of St Wilfrid's School, Haywards Heath to lose his life in the Great War.

Arthur was the son of Alfred and Sarah Ann Barnett, and was born on the 19th March 1899 in Haywards Heath, the youngest of nine children. He was baptised at St Wilfrid’s church on 14th May of that year. The family lived at 8 Western Road in 1901, and were at “Winston”, Western Road in 1911 together with two Jennings boys who were boarders, their father being a widower in the workhouse. Arthur’s father was a builder’s labourer, his mother died in 1916.

Arthur was killed in action on 27 May 1918 in France, and has no known grave. His father received his pay of £4 3s 7d on 24 Sep 1918 and £4 War Gratuity on 1 December 1919.
