The Mystery of Harriett Salter Revisited
Not sure if this is the correct procedure but I'm sure someone will advise me if I'm wrong - this refers to my post before Christmas re g/g/grandmother Harriett Salter, her children Harriett Jnr (my g/grandmother), George Webb
Salter, & Emma Webb Salter. Unable to establish who exactly Harriett Snr was (no marriage was found & no Mr Salter on the scene) I was advised to send for the b/cert for Emma & the d/cert for George, who died in 1849 aged 10.Harriett Jnr b 1837 was too early for b/cert. No b/cert for Emma b 1842 could be found, but I've just received George's d/cert & it gives his father as William Salter, milliner. We had been curious re Webb middle names, as Harriett Snr lived with William Cooper Webb, tobacconist & worked as his assistant in Goswell street,Clerkenwell. It now looks as though she may have been married to a Mr Salter after all, but I've never been able to trace a marriage. Harriett Snr was b about 1811 in The Strand,so any William Salter, milliner is likely to be about that age & end up around Clerkenwell. So guys, what do you think? |

Who is the informant on George's death certificate, Vita?
Also here is a link to the other thread for reference: http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/F...ad.php?t=18979 |

Also, now I am having a look through the other thread, are you saying that you ordered Emma's birth cert using the references that Merry gave in post #5 on that thread, and they said there was no such certificate?

everywhere else she's shown as Emma Webb Salter. Realised my mistake but thought I'd wait & see what was shown on George's d/cert before re - ordering Emma's. I know, I know!!!!!! |

The birth index does show her as Emma Webb Salter, but also as Emma Webb Webb. But both index entries should lead to the same certificate. |

UK Census Online lists a William Salter, Hat Manufacturer, on the 1841 census, but I think they have misread Historical Painter. So forget that one!

Oh, I didn't realise Harriett was a milliner. So William Salter may very well not have existed. It would be illegal to knowingly give false information when registering the death, but the informant was most likely just passing on the information that had been given to him and had no way of knowing whether it was correct. Anyway, lots of people did break the law and give false information on registrations.
