Tradition of 127 Years Ends

A family tradition ended yesterday when Mr Percy Atkinson , of 15 Skipton Road, Barnoldswick, left the tailor’s at 9 Church Street for the last time, the shop which has been in the family since 1891. The business of Atkinson’s, Tailors, ended with his retirement. The tradition was started by Mr Atkinson’s grandfather William*, who tailored in his own home, going out to customers and sometimes spending some time on private work. Some of his most important work came every year when he spent as long as three months at a time tailoring for Lord Ribblesdale and his staff at Gisburne Hall; he went before that to do work for the Lister family at Malham Tarn, before *Lord Ribblesdale was knighted.

Mr Percy Atkinson’s great uncle, *Roger took over the shop from William, and started a shop in Butts, Barnoldswick, in 1825, and when he left the country for *Bengal , two years later Mr Atkinson’s grandfather Thomas took over. In 1877, when Thomas died, another Mr William Atkinson , father to the present Mr Atkinson, took charge of the business, and some years later the shop at 9 Church Street was run by his seven sons, of whom Mr Percy is the last remaining.

Atkinson’s, beside being a family tradition, is part of Barnoldswick, and many people who have known of the change of business at the shop have remarked that Barnoldswick will not be the same without the tailor’s shop. The first people to have a sewing machine in Barnoldswick, Atkinson’s were a very enterprising firm, Grandfather Thomas did not trust it and refused to use it. When the business was in its prime, there were into the teens of tailors working in a room above the shop.

Mr Percy Atkinson tells me he has not decided what to do yet, but for the time being he will stay in
Barnoldswick. The shop is to become and Army and Navy stores."


*Joseph Percy Atkinson 1885-1972, William was his Great, great grandfather [William Atkinson 1734-1812, of Gisburn, about 5 miles from Barnoldswick].

*Thomas Lister was created Baron Ribblesdale 26 Oct 1797

*Roger Atkinson 1760-1827 was his great grandfather, not great uncle. In 1822 he was listed in a trade directory as a tailor in Gisburn, along with his son Thomas.

*Bengal??? Roger Atkinson died at Barnoldswick in 1827 and is buried there.
William Parkinson Atkinson 1840-1927 who wrote a local history of Barnoldswick “Old Barlick”, which also has one or two anecdotes about his father Thomas’s tailoring in peoples’ homes. No mention of prior generations or Bengal.
