My most elderly ancestor?
I have found that I am descended from one Edward (or Edmond) Armsby of Bletchington in Oxfordshire.
According to the Oxfordshire FHS's transcriptions for Bletchington, his burial entry reads "an aged man beinge by his own relation in his life time and the opinion of other aged men who knewe him even from their minority - about one hundred and tenne yeres of age died January 15". The year was 1628/9. Therefore he would have to have been born c. 1518. However, I'm not sure! He married Dorothy East in 1592 and they had three children - Joane, Alice and John. I am transcribing his will and I can't really find anything that would indicate his age. I think I shall have to take this with a pinch of salt. |

Hi Julie - I'm having fun with this lot!
Are you safely home? I've rather lost track of your movements as we've been away too. |

My ancestor Esther Sherlicor (nee Moorcroft) is supposed to have been 99 when she died in 1786, according to "Annals of Southport and district", but the two possible baptisms for her are in 1700 and 1704, she got married in 1731 and had her last child in 1747, so her supposed age at death is way off.

Kate, I suppose my Edward and your Esther just seemed very old!
When Edward's widow was buried the entry says "Dorothye, an ancient old widdowe". |

Not my ancestor, but seen in a burial register "Blah blah, aged 142" In the margin the Vicar had solemnly written "A very great ayge". I did look for his baptism, but couldn't find it, lol.

This one I know to be true - William Nicol (MFF) died in 1974, a few days before his 97th birthday.

It is possible that Edward was born c. 1545 because there is a marriage between Edward Armsby and Jane ? on 15 October 1570 at St Giles, Bletchington. There are no children in the parish register, however, until 1583. Francis, no parents named.

I'm distantly related to this lady, who's still going strong at 111:
