What does it say for her birthplace on the censuses, Morf? And how old is she on the 1851 census?

On the census Kate there's Bristol St. Philips, Bristol St. Judes and just Bristol.
In 1851 she's aged 8. On her death record in 1912, she was 61. |

Ooh, Alexanders! My father's Alexanders came from Wiltshire/Berkshire/Lancashire!
I'll have a look later when I have more time. |

Thanks Elizabeth.
The census states her father Joseph was born in Bradford or Trowbridge, Wiltshire |

On the 1851 census the "Mary Ann" you refer to is "Ann" and her parents are Joseph and Jane.

Why was she in Sowerby in 1861 and where were the rest of the family? Especially as she was back in Bristol in 1863 for her marriage.

Yes, I have that Elizabeth.
I've found Joseph in 1841 census married to Sophia (Greening) and I've always had her as Mary Ann's mother. I tried years ago to get a birth certificate for Mary Ann, but the GRO couldn't find her, so I can't confirm Sophia is her mother. |

She was working as a cotton weaver.
Joseph was in Thornbury with another new wife Catherine (Gardiner) and her daughter Rosa Ann aged 11. |
