Default (15) William Frank Payne TF/1839 1/4th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment

15th of the Old Boys of St Wilfrid's School, Haywards Heath to give his life in the Great War.

William was born in 1895 in East Grinstead, Sussex, son of Richard and Mary Jane Payne. In 1901 they lived in Forest Row where his father was a shepherd and around 1902 they moved to Haywards Heath. In 1911 they lived at 40 College Road, his father was working at the nearby gasworks and William had a job as a builder’s painter working for Horace Finch, a well known local builder.

William arrived at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli on 8 August 1915 and was killed the following day, 9 Aug 1915 aged 20. It is not known where he was buried, so he is commemorated on the Helles Memorial to the missing.

His death was not confirmed until November 1916 and at that time his parents let it be known in the local paper and also appealed for any of his comrades to contact them if they could let them know how he met his death, adding that he may have been known by his nickname of “Dripping”.

His father Richard was sent his effects of £3 4s 11d on 7th February 1917 and a War Gratuity of £3 10s on 12 December 1919.

William turns out to be related to my husband, through their Goddard ancestors. William's grandfather George Goddard and OH's 3x great grandmother Fanny Goddard were brother and sister.

Link to their common ancestor James Goddard
