I am just revisiting Ellen Griggs nee Bryant who died 4 Q 1905 at Marylebone aged 49.
I currently don't have FMP, but I am wondering if they may now have the image of Ellen Bryant's marriage to William Griggs at St Martin in the Fields 26/12/1876 which may state who she believed her father was. Thank you. Julie |

Yes, it is there, Julie. The bride said her father was Joseph Bryant, miner.
Do you need the rest of the details?

Baptism transcriptions show her bap the same time as Joseph and Ann's dau, Emily (same parents for both). Emily's birth reg shows mmn Ford.

Many thanks Merry.
She was raised as the daughter of Joseph and Anna and baptised as such. It was only on the 1861 census, that she is down as grand-daughter. When she is 14 she is working as a servant, so it does not give her parental relationship. That birth record saying her mother's maiden name was Bryant, is what has been thought. Jane B 1838 and Grace B 1840 are old enough to be her mother. They both married, gave birth to children in Cornwall and then migrated to Australia without her, so she definitely wasn't included in their families. She made a life for herself in London and Buckinghamshire with her husband, but there is a photo of her in Cornwall with her two sisters?, Anna Bryant nee Ford and a maiden aunt, Jane Bryant, so she was definitely still part of the Bryant family I am pleased to say. |

Of course, as you said, she may have believed Joseph was her father and that her mother (whoever that was) was her sister. The birth cert seems to be the only way to go to get that info.

Sorry Merry it is a number of years since I visited Ellen. It is just a cousin was asking me today about her and when I read this thread, I wanted to confirm who she thought her father was from her marriage. It appears that she had no contact with her birth father. In the photo she looked very much like Emily, who she was baptised with and so people probably thought they were twins. Thanks again.
