aft Jun (census) and before his son Alexander turned 9 in November 1841

According to son Alexander's obituary, his father was employed in the Dundee Railway Carriage Workshops and died when Alexander was eight, so in 1841.
This seems pretty early for railways, but apparently in 1839, the Dundee and Abroath Railway had 14 miles of track.(The Civil Engineers and Architects Journal V2, 1839)
