Jill

I have a copy of Berkshire Overseers Papers CD from Berks FHS and a John Badcock was Overseer for the Parish of Shrivenham in 1784.

"Date: 15 Dec 1784 Bond of Churchwardens Edward Butler and John Costar and Overseers John Badcock and Amariah Fairthorne of Shrivenham Berkshire in sum of £40 to Churchwardens and Overseers of Wantage the condition being that Mary Hoarman, singlewoman late of Shrivenham but now of Wantage on oath before JP Rev Barfoot Colman declared that she was with child and that Richard Holliday, of Denchworth did beget the said child. The above bound Churchwardens and Overseers will provide for the child."

That is the only entry for John. Other Badcocks appear in the index - let me know if you'd like any more!

That very intersting Sue, I have just bought a CD of parish records for Shrivenham and found that as churchwarden in 1782 caused the church to be repaired.

Elizabeth, can I ask where you found the Will, please? I have never found any Berkshire Wills apart from those on the Wiltshire Index?

Sue, I looked in the Death Duty Registers on FMP. I find I'm a bit hit-and-miss with them, but at least they are useful when you know the year of death.

Remember to look on Origins.net under Oxfordshire wills, as some Berkshire ones can be found there.

Thanks Elizabeth

I had forgotten about the Death Duty Registers! Unfortunately I don't know his date of death but I'll check some of the possible burials...

Apologies, Jill for hijacking your thread - I'll go away now!
